Who has Buzzy?

U-M visiting Buzzy"Buzzy was mentioned on our last Press Gaineys!
We could never have gotten the needle pain relief buy-in
from all our practitioners without it." -Sandy Merckel,

Wow!  As of 11-1-11 Buzzy is currently being used or trialled in over 300 hospitals in 46 states that want to increase hospital quality and patient satisfaction.  In addition, many allergy, immunology, pediatric and dermatology clinics have gotten a Buzzy.   If you'd like to see which hospital is using Buzzy and/or Bee-Stractors, check below.   Thanks to those who have sent quotes (we'd love more!) and thanks for caring about pain relief.  Check out the Poke-a-dot plan some of these visionaries implemented!

One of the primary components of patient satisfaction is caregiver's attention to pain.  "As a commitment to our patients, we are dedicated not only to our profession but our quality of care as well. Resultantly, we are proud to introduce Buzzy®, a device used specifically for our child patients to ensure the most comfortable and pleasant experience possible."  To let your patients know you care enough to offer Buzzy, like Crutchfield Dermatology did, there are services that offer a free press release.

University of Iowa: I'm the supervisor of an outpatient laboratory in Iowa who performs a lot of blood draws on children. Buzzy has been very effective for us since he purchased him 2 months ago. We have used them on children ranging in age from 3-12. Each child seems to be less anxious of the procedure when Buzzy is used. It's a great product. -Meighan

Buzzy Gets Busy
RELIEF FROM NEEDLE PAIN: THE NON-INVASIVE COMFORT MEASURE
No one wants to be the bad guy when it comes to needle pokes. The nurses at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics want kids to feel better and now they have a new helper to ease the pain.

A patient gets a little help from "Buzzy" while getting an IV start for an infusion treatment
Hiding in her pillow, C. wanted to be invisible. She received infusions every six weeks for the last four years of her young life. She knew that it would hurt and she was tired of hurting.
Kathy, her infusion nurse, introduced her to Buzzy. An adorable battery-operated bee that vibrates while distracting the nerves, Buzzy rests above the injection site.
During the introduction, Kathy was able to insert the IV needle without so much as a wince. All the tension left her face as she realized the stick that she was dreading had come and gone. She sank back in her recliner, thinking about watching a movie.
HOW BUZZY HELPS
Outpatient Infusion nurses Debbie Goodwin and Kathy Sarna agree that one of the biggest obstacles to starting an IV in young patients is anxiety. And that’s where Buzzy gets busy. Buzzy, a non-invasive comfort measure provides pain relief for kids who experience discomfort from injections, IV starts, blood draws or even finger sticks.
HOW BUZZY WORKS
Buzzy attaches with velcro to the arm just above the needle stick site. As a battery-operated, reusable device, it vibrates or buzzes, which distracts the nerves. Sensation is also reduced through numbness from the frozen wings, but Goodwin and Sarna find the wings cumbersome and unnecessary.
Recounting story after story of patients who feared needles, Goodwin and Sarna watched their patients relax after receiving relief from needle pain with Buzzy’s help. Due to Buzzy’s effectiveness and affordability, some patients’ families have purchased the units online.
“There are about 25-30 units throughout the hospital, one unit on each inpatient floor and several in the outpatient areas," says Nicki Stang, Child Life Outpatient Supervisor and Comfort Task Force member.  Buzzy can be used alone or in conjunction with other comfort measures. Taking the sting out of a poke, Buzzy keeps busy around Children’s Mercy.
